Give Our Shelter Dogs a Day Out in Tombstone!
At Tombstone Small Animal Shelter, we believe every dog deserves fresh air, new experiences, and a chance to show their true personality. Our Dog Field Trips & Outings Program takes adoptable dogs out of the kennel for safe, supervised adventures in the community.
These short outings help reduce stress, build confidence, improve behavior, and make our dogs more adoptable — all while giving them a fun break from shelter life.
Why Dog Field Trips Matter
Decreases kennel stress and boredom
Builds confidence and social skills
Helps dogs show their best, happiest selves to potential adopters
Increases visibility and chances of finding a forever home
Provides essential mental and physical enrichment
How the Program Works
Volunteers take an approved, vaccinated dog on a short, supervised outing (usually 1–4 hours). Popular outings include:
Walks at local parks or trails
Quick car rides with the windows down
Pup cups or ice cream stops
Visits to pet-friendly stores (with prior approval)
Quiet time in a yard or on a porch
All participating dogs are behavior-assessed and up-to-date on vaccinations. We provide everything you need: leash, harness, waste bags, water bowl, and treats.
2026 Petfinder Foundation Dog Field Trips Grant Program
Thanks to generous support from the Petfinder Foundation’s 2026 Dog Field Trips Grant, we are expanding this program this year. Grant funds will be used to purchase essential outing supplies, including:
Durable leashes, collars, and harnesses
High-visibility safety vests
Portable water bowls and carriers
Enrichment toys and comfort items
Transportation and emergency supplies
This funding allows us to safely take more dogs on meaningful field trips throughout 2026, improving their quality of life and adoption success.
Who Can Participate?
Must be 18 years or older
Have reliable transportation
Pass a quick orientation and reference check
Commit to safe handling and returning the dog on time
No previous experience is required — we provide guidance and support.
